East Bay Times: Letter: More Alameda County children will get solid start in education with Measure A

As a teacher working with 4- and 5-year-olds in Oakland for over nine years, the greatest inequality I see is the incredible education gap that starts early in children’s lives and is evident when they set foot in a classroom.

More kids get solid start in education with Measure A

Re: “Local tax measures on the ballot make inequality worse” (Opinion section, May 19):

As a teacher working with 4- and 5-year-olds in Oakland for over nine years, the greatest inequality I see is the incredible education gap that starts early in children’s lives and is evident when they set foot in a classroom.

Thousands of Alameda County children do not have access to early education and only 44 percent of children are ready for kindergarten. We can do better by supporting early educators and assisting families who cannot bear child-care costs as incomes barely cover housing and other needs. We can provide thousands of children with scholarships for high-quality preschool.

Parents, grandparents, educators, medical professionals and more agree we must invest in early education now. By voting yes on Measure A on June 5, we can help more children have solid educational starts and create a thriving community. If we do not support our youngest children now, then when?
